Lehigh Valley Consumer Price Index (LV CPI)
Lehigh Valley Consumer Price Index (LV CPI). has been in operation since 1984, the
LV CPI project is a quarterly survey of the prices of a group of some 2,500 items. The
Consumer Price Office at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (Washington, DC) selects these
items to be the basic items on which the average urban dweller spends his budget. They
include a variety of food items, shelter costs, transportation costs, medical costs,
entertainment costs, and personal care costs. The center has selected local points of
purchase and has established a cooperative understanding with local merchants to
provide information on prices. The Center reports a weighted average of the change in
price of these items as the inflation rate for the Lehigh Valley. Historically, the
community has accepted the LV CPI as the standard for the Lehigh Valley and the local
media have reported the results of the survey on a regular basis. The rate of inflation in
our area has proven to be significantly different from that of the Philadelphia area and
the national average. This makes the LV CPI the only true inflation gauge for the Lehigh
Valley.
